THE ORCADE IS CALLED TO BE POSTPONED
October 19, 2011

The ORcade , a new website that was to be launched during this month has received a lot of criticism, and Gov. John Kitzhaber  has expressed his concern about the target market of this website due to it´s design since it´s characters might attract minors.  He is in favor of postponing the launching of the website.
This website is marketed as a second-chance jackpots site wherein you can also find video games and is also a social networking portal.  However what is most criticized of this website is the design which is very lively and actually cute, you could mistake it for a computer game if you are not careful to actually see the difference. “It’s clear who’s a target of something like that,” said Debra Merskin, a University of Oregon communications professor who has worked on state lottery marketing campaigns in Florida and Illinois. “It’s cultivating future customers.”

According to Tim Raphael, the governor´s spokesman, the governor was briefed about the concept of the website and  had no qualms about it however when he actually had a look at the site, he was concerned since it had and animated introductory video ( and has been removed) so this led him to call for a meeting with   Lottery Director Larry Niswender and Lottery Commission Chairman Steve Ungar to talk about the new site. What the governor wants is to see to it, and really make sure that the campaign is not targeted to minors, so he has requested the commission to meticulously revise their marketing campaign.

The Lottery had originally planned to create a buzz with the new website by releasing a new scratch-off ticket with a theme based on the video game called the “Icicle Climb”, which is a popular video game for children.  They were also planning to offer the video game for free at the Lottery´s website. It is obvious that the Lottery had in mind to target its game to a younger market, maybe even paving the way for future lottery players.  Although they have announced that it is not a type of online gambling because the website is not designed for actual transactions that involve money, they still raise concerns amongst the community members specially since they continue to market their products in such a way that children and teenagers might find attractive.  And they are a susceptible target market.
