OREGON LAUNCHES GAMBLING AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
October 12, 2011

Play… but play responsibly.  The Oregon Lottery will be airing two new TV ads as part of the new campaign for gambling awareness.  These ads are part of an ongoing program that the Oregon Lottery already runs that serves to give information about the issues that come with compulsive gambling and the help network that is available across the state.   But TV ads are only part of this call for conscious gaming, there are also radio ads, billboards and messages on the web. Both TV ads contain strong messages, the first one focuses on what happens internally, the struggle that gamblers go through and experience, while the second one concentrates on the message of getting your life together and moving forward past this addiction.  They are both filled with positive attitude and ways to cope and solve this problem. “The ads will be relevant to both problem gamblers and their significant others.” said Carole Hardy, the Lottery’s assistant director for marketing, who is also the chairwoman of the Oregon Council for Problem Gambling. “Additionally, the messages are especially intended to make an emotional connection directly with problem gamblers.”

The Oregon Lottery worked hand in hand with representatives and key experts from the Oregon problem gambling treatment in order to create these ads since it is very important to be able to convey the right message to the public.  The goal is to make the assistance that the state provides to problem gamblers be accessible, in such a way that more people will feel free to seek their help.  Each ad announces the Problem Gambling helpline and Website to increase the awareness of Oregonians that here is a 24/7, seven days per week service and they can access counselors that can help them and find free treatment programs for them.  The website also includes a chat option that will give those who are interested, a direct way to contact and interact with a helpline counselor online from the commodity of their homes.  This campaign will be considered successful if it can persuade more people to call to these Problem Gambling helpline and more people approach to go under treatment programs.

Sept. 29 has been proclaimed by Governor Kitzhaber as Problem Gambling Awareness Day. Oregonians for Gambling Awareness Organization (OGAO) have done a huge effort in promoting the awareness to problem gambling and have succeeded in their efforts to have this day recognized.
