“We play and play and play, but we never win,” Jay Lewis, a Newark resident and a regular state lottery player, stated. “We’re overdue. Well overdue.”
We all know the chances of getting the lottery numbers right are slim, but it looks like the people from the 07102 zip code are the unluckiest of all. A paper has recently released a study, which says that since 2005, the 07102 zip code has produced lottery earnings of almost $129 million (which got it into the top 100 state zip codes) but only managed to win less than $1 million. In fact, the exact sum was the worst in New Jersey, $961,000.
The New Jersey Lottery makes almost $2.6 billion a year, generating many hundreds of millions of dollars for the state treasury.
“I can remember the first number they ever called — 810,” said Robert Strigler, a 74-year-old who plays the lottery daily. “I’ve won $9,000. Another time $6,000. It’s a shot you take. Hopefully, one day you get that hit, you can pay off some bills or have something to leave for your children or grandchildren. That’s how I look at it.”
However, Mr. Strigler is actually one of the fortunate. “I don’t know,” said William Cavabal, another lottery player, stated. “We never win here. It makes me afraid, sometimes, to play.”
In comparison, the inhabitants of Bayonne (07002) lead the top of the New Jersey zip code spenders with more than $228 million. This small establishment has just 63,000 inhabitants, but they are the ones who won the most prizes worth $1,000 or more. As a whole, the people who live in Bayonne managed to win in excess of $15 million. However, out of the 2,554 winners, only one managed to win more than $1 million. National Lottery
“There is miniscule value in avoiding the lower numbers, like 1 to 31, because some players pick numbers based on birthdays. That would mean that if you pick low numbers, too, you would have a greater chance of having to share the jackpot,” Michael Shackleford stated . “That aside, it is just a game of luck. Players who think they have some system to beat the odds are deluding themselves.”
