MANY STATES TRYING TO INTRODUCE ONLINE LOTTERIES AND GAMBLING
August 16, 2011

Many a states are now taking a strong interest in online lotteries and other forms of gambling. The heads of the District of Columbia are less than satisfied that residents often travel to West Virginia, Maryland or Pennsylvania to play the lotteries or gamble in casinos. As there is a desperate need of cash, just like in many other states across the country, district officials want to grab a share of what gambling generates every year. State lottery

By the end of the year, the district wishes to put up an Internet gambling hub which would allow residents to gamble in restaurants, cafes, bars and even in the comfort of their homes. Residents of Washington could be able to play the lotteries, poker, blackjack and other games that are associated with casino gambling. Lottery winning numbers

“They can do it from Starbucks, a restaurant, bar or hotel, or from a private residence,” Buddy Roogow, executive director of the D.C. Lottery, stated and also added that the new games could generate more than $9 million every year. “That’s real money in D.C.”

The idea is gaining a lot of supporters throughout the country. The District of Columbia could be the first to legalize online gambling as a way to solve budget problems, while Iowa becomes increasingly attracted to it and Massachusetts and California have pending bills on it. However, the Department of Justice could deflate the officials of the states very quickly as it has been highly intolerant of any form of online gambling. Critics supporting the Justice Department’s view claim online gambling will “promote addictive wagering and lead to personal debt problems.”

However, officials stated that safeguards will be put in place, which should deal with any potential social problems. The thing is that they actually need the money, which should complete revenue brought by taxes they receive from poker houses, horse tracks and regular casinos. Lottery checker

“States had looked at this haphazardly and not very energetically until the Great Recession hit, but now they’re desperate for money,” I. Nelson Rose, a professor specialized in gambling issues at Whittier Law School, stated. “When it comes to taxing gambling, the thing they have left is the Internet.”
