LOTTERY WINNER STILL USES FOOD STAMPS
June 21, 2011

About a year ago, Leroy Fick, aged 59, from Auburn, managed to win a $2 million prize at the state lottery. However, even with all that wealth, the man is still a fan of collecting food stamps. Lottery earnings are not counted as income, so Leroy Fick is still eligible for food stamps. As we all know, food stamps come from taxpayer money and they are designed to help those who can’t make it on their own. Lottery winning numbers

“If you’re going to try to make me feel bad, you’re not going to do it,” Fick stated.

John Wilson, Fick’s lawyer, stated that Fick reported his earnings but DHS officials decided that he should still be able to use his Bridge Card for groceries.

Al Kimichik, DHS director of the office of inspector general, stated that an initiative to close the lottery loophole was taken, but he cannot comment on individual cases. Lottery checker

“For Leroy Fick to continue to use a Bridge Card, paid for by the taxpayers, after winning the lottery, is obscene,” Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, stated. “What a waste of taxpayer money. There is no liquid asset requirement for getting food stamps. The department is asking the federal government for an immediate change (in policy). They’re hoping this case will help the federal government act.”

Senator Jones said he had contacted the DHS office, but the only answer he got was that they are unable to do anything because of federal laws.

“I am not going to sit and debate the ethics of this,” John Wilson added. “But from his standpoint, he did what he was supposed to do — he informed the state, and the state said he could keep using the card. The problem is with the state.”

So far, no legal action was taken to close this loophole, but officials say something must be done, and soon. Meanwhile, most common citizens believe what Leroy Fick is doing is wrong, but almost all of the blame lies with the federal officials. It is beyond doubt that even though one wins the lottery, one would also seek other means of income. What Leroy Fick is doing may not be given as an example of good ethics, but it is still legally correct. Lottery numbers
