INDIANA PRODUCES ANOTHER POWERBALL JACKPOT WINNER
June 27, 2011

April was a very special month for Powerball Lottery players in Indiana, as two consecutive jackpots were won there. First, there were the two welders from Clarksville, Indiana, who managed to win an astounding $221.7 million jackpot. And if that wasn’t enough, William Swanson II, born in Hoosier, managed to win a $74 million jackpot at the Powerball lottery. Kathryn Densborn, Executive Director at the Hoosier Lottery, was the one who gave William Swanson his award, in Indianapolis at the Hoosier Lottery Headquarters.

William Swanson is a geoscientist who was born and raised in Northwestern Indiana. He graduated from the Indiana University and he was visiting Marilyn Swanson, his 81-year-old mother, when he purchased the lucky quick pick Powerball winning ticket. The man chose the lump sum payment option, which left him with about $27 million after taxes. William Swanson’s mother and himself purchase lottery tickets every time he goes to visit, and one of the couple of tickets purchased that day proved to be the winner. William was already home, in Houston, when his mother discovered the win, she immediately called him and he was on the first plane back to Merillville. US lottery

“She can live rest of her life exactly the way she wants,” William Swanson stated. “She will never have to go to a nursing home.”

Mr. Swanson said that his plan is to provide his mother with everything she could ever wish for, as she grew up in a numerous family during the Great Depression and her husband had died just 2 years ago. The first thing he plans to do is buy her a house close to him and a red Cadillac. He has no plans for retirement yet, but he did say that he will take some time off to clear everything.

“I enjoy my job. I need to spend a little time thinking about it before I retire,” William Swanson stated.

Besides being the second consecutive jackpot won with a ticket sold by a Hoosier Lottery retailer, the win also represents the 38th time this has happened over the years. The Powerball lottery is played in 44 states, but it is clear that Indiana is one of the luckier states. Just last year, the Hoosier Lottery produced $190 million of income for the Indiana State Treasury. State lottery
