The Georgia Lottery was created in November 1992. The people of Georgia voted for a government operated lottery which would provide them with entertainment and help education as much as possible. The Lottery for Education Act commissioned the creation of the Georgia Lottery Corporation, which is a government controlled institution which oversees and runs the state lottery. In June, 1993, the Georgia Lottery launched its first game and ticket sales reached $ 52 million in the first week. That established a new opening week state lottery record of $7.80 per resident. 5 months after its opening day, the Georgia Lottery sold tickets worth more than $463 million. That led to a first year lottery tickets sale level of $1.1 billion. That meant that in its first year of existence, the Georgia State Lottery helped education with more than $362 million. During its second year of existence, the Lottery increased its yearly sales to a stunning $1.4 billion, which increased the total sum granted to education by more than $500 million.

The trend continued for 7 consecutive years as the Georgia State Lottery kept on surpassing every prediction with its awesome sales. For the following years, the Georgia State Lottery kept on doing great, but the record sales came in its 13th year of existence. Rebecca Paul later stepped down and was replaced by Margaret DeFrancisco in 2003.

To date, the Georgia State Lottery gave more than $9 billion to education. With the help fo the lottery, more than 1 million students had the opportunity to finish their education in Georgia’s colleges and universities. More funding was used to upgrade classroom gear and state of the art hardware was purchased every year. At the moment, the Georgia State Lottery is one of the most successful in the United States, even if it is among some of the youngest.
