WINNING STRETCH OF ROAD RUNS THROUGH HARTSVILLE
December 6, 2013
COLUMBIA, SC (December 4, 2013) – A half-mile stretch of road in Hartsville is paved in gold. In just over a month, two South Carolina Education Lottery retailers on S. 5th Street have sold top prize winning tickets to area residents. Starting at Video City at 505 S. St., where staff suggested a Lucky Loot scratch-off to a customer in late October that won the player $200,000. Owner Diane Cassidy says the lottery win, their largest, has been good for business. Video City was the first video store in Hartsville to open 28 years ago, and Cassidy says they are the only one left. A copy of the $200,000 winning ticket posted in the store’s window has been a bright spot for Video City and reenergized ticket sales. “Regulars have been telling me it was time we sold a big one,” said Cassidy, who’s been pleased to see new faces coming in to play the Lottery. “The winner has been back in too,” said Cassidy, laughing how she spent only $2 on a lottery ticket after winning the cash. A minute’s drive down the road from Video City sits the Piggly Wiggly #35 at 842 S. 5th St. where a grocery shopper walked out with a $100,000 winning ticket last week. Piggly Wiggly staff tells the Lottery it’s the winner’s habit to do her grocery shopping and then pick out a ticket before she leaves. She scratched the Strike it Rich! ticket at the customer service counter, and when she saw what she won, leaned over the counter and said, “Oh, boy.” She, too, has since returned to the store to tell them about her trip to Columbia and how nervous she felt cashing in the winning ticket. Both retailers won with a selling bonus when the tickets were claimed, Video City for $2,000 and Piggly Wiggly for $1,000.
