SAN FRANCISCO MAN CLAIMS $60,000 IN WILD CARD PRIZES
June 27, 2012
Keith Liu of San Francisco has claimed $60,000 in Wild Card winnings from two separate tickets for the June 20 draw, one worth $20,000 and the other worth $40,000. Both tickets were purchased in Shelby, one from the Albertsons at 130 5th Ave. N. and the other from Town Pump at 1350 U.S. Highway 2. He purchased both tickets on the same day.
Keith’s unusual win happened because he purchased eight plays for one ticket and four plays for the other ticket. For each play, he picked the same five numbers but a different wild card. Since matching five numbers wins a $5,000 prize, and he matched five numbers 12 times, he won a total of $60,000 between the two tickets.
Keith was on vacation in Montana visiting family when he decided to buy his tickets. He thought he might win multiple smaller prizes, but the actual total took him by surprise.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “Most of the time, I only get two or three numbers that match.”
When he checked the winning numbers on his cell phone, he realized that they looked familiar, but he forgot where he had placed his tickets. He later found them in a book.
Keith told Lottery officials that he believes he won because he was trying a new strategy for playing the Lottery.
In November 2011, Keith purchased a $20 Montana Millionaire ticket while on vacation in Montana, which was a $10,000 winner.
At home in San Francisco, Keith enjoys playing the California Lottery on a weekly basis, usually buying between $5–$20 worth of various types of tickets.
Keith plans to use his winnings to pay off some bills.
