ROCKINGHAM COUNTY TEACHER RECEIVES SUPER TEACHER AWARD
May 30, 2012
There are teachers, and then there are “Super Teachers.” Margo Jantzi, media center teacher at Cub Run Elementary, has been selected as one of eight educators statewide to receive the 2012 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award.
Margo Janzi was awarded today in a surprise presentation at the school in front of students, faculty and special guests. The award, sponsored by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies, consists of a cash prize of $2,000 and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies. In addition to the wonderful classroom supplies and cash prizes, this year, all eight winning Super Teacher schools will receive a dynamic Science Museum of Virginia educational experience to be fulfilled during the 2012-2013 school year!
The Lottery received more than 1,100 Super Teacher nominations statewide and more than 140 in the Winchester sales area. Margo Jantzi is the eighth of eight public school teachers to receive the Super Teacher Award for 2012.
Rebecca J Poma, PTA President, nominated Margo Jantzi because “Her energy, creativity and caring nature are contagious” In her nomination essay, Poma also praises Ms. Jantzi because she continues to exceed expectations. She wrote, “When she hosts the book fairs, and especially the family events, she creates a theme students love with everything right down to themed food. This past fall, Ms. Jantzi spearheaded the ‘Out of This World’ family reading event at our school (though she would give the credit to everyone else) and it was one of our most successful events with over 600 participants.”
The 2012 Virginia Lottery Super Teachers were selected by a panel of distinguished educators and community leaders, including:
* Dr. Jo Lynne DeMary, Director, Center for School Improvement, VCU School of Education, former State Superintendent for Public Instruction * Dr. Martha Ross, JMU, Department Head, Early, Elementary and Reading Education * Hon. Jim Dyke, Partner, McGuire Woods, former Secretary of Education for Virginia * Anne Carson, President of the Virginia PTA * Roderick Zano, 2011 Super Teacher Award Recipient, Princess Anne High School, Virginia Beach
The judges selected the eight winners based on the strength of the nominations and educators’ qualities as exemplified by the nominator. Each nomination included a short essay addressing the teacher’s passion for and commitment to the profession, innovation and creativity in the classroom, and parental involvement.
“We are delighted to recognize Margo Jantzi for her dedication and unique approach to teaching,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. “The Virginia Lottery is committed to helping Virginia’s public schools, and that includes recognizing outstanding Super Teachers like Ms. Jantzi who make a difference everyday in the lives of Virginia’s youth.”
