RICHMOND MAN GETS THE SURPRISE OF HIS LIFE
August 14, 2012
Bill Hammons, 59, of Richmond got the surprise of his life on Saturday night when he watched the Cash Ball drawing on TV and saw all five of his numbers match.
“I always check the Cash Ball number first. Then I looked at the other numbers on my ticket and before I knew it, I realized I had all the numbers,” Hammons told lottery officials.
“My stomach was tied up in knots. I thought I was dreaming, waiting for someone to pinch me, but it’s for real,” Hammons said.
Bill’s wife, who was asleep, woke up from all the excitement and that’s when he told her, “I’ve just won $200,000!” His wife called the store to get the winning numbers because they were concerned as to whether Bill had written the right numbers down from the drawing.
After leaving lottery headquarters with a check for $138,000 after taxes, Hammons plans to pay off debt and build on his retirement.
Hammons chose his own numbers on his ticket but there was no significance with the numbers in the line that he matched. Hammons bought his winning Cash Ball ticket at Redi Mart #17 in Richmond.
