Leona Starman is an octogenarian anyone would remember meeting. She’s outgoing, gregarious and funny! Recently, after winning the $2 million top prize on the California Lottery’s Set For Life Scratchers game, she basically put on a comedy show for the District Office staff.

Starman is retired from the Alameda Naval Air Station where she was a sheet metal worker for the airplanes. “I worked on airplanes, airplane parts, whatever was needed…but I didn’t change tires,” she explained. Starman scratched her ticket right away and when she saw “LIFE” on the ticket, she says, “I didn’t know what that meant, but I thought it might be something good, so I signed it right away.”

Starman purchased her ticket at Quik Stop, which is located at 505 A Street in Hayward (Alameda County). She doesn’t go there often, but needed milk and since she plays the Lottery “every chance she gets,” she picked up two Scratchers tickets while visiting. What will she do with her windfall? She says she’ll “spend it,” possibly buying a new roof for her house, maybe a new lawn and a paint job for her current car because she doesn’t want a new one.  When asked about a vacation, she said, “I don’t fly. I used to work on planes and that’s why I don’t fly!”

The retailer will receive a bonus check of $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.
