MOUNTAIN VIEW COUPLE CASHES $50,000 CROSSWORD TICKET

Angela Brackel of Mountain View claimed a $50,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery “Bonus Word Crossword” Scratchers ticket. She presented the winning ticket on behalf of her husband, David Herold, at the Springfield Lottery office on July 2.
“My husband bought the ticket on the way home from work. He brought it home, and we scratched together,” began Brackel.
She said that the couple likes to play crossword games and that David had originally wanted the $5 crossword game, but the store was sold out. He bought three “Bonus Word Crossword” tickets instead at his regular stop, Cross Cut Liquor, 208 E. Fifth St., in Mountain View.
“He gets lucky there,” said Brackel about the location. “It was the last $10 in his pocket. Sometimes he just gets this feeling, and he bought a ticket.”
Anticipation began to build as they were scratching the ticket. At first, David thought he won $500. He found another word, bringing the total prize to $5,000 and told Brackel, “I’m not done.” He located another word, and the celebration began. They quickly went back to the store to confirm the good fortune and took it to show some friends before settling in for the night.
“We guarded it with our life,” said Brackel. “Put it away, and guarded it. We checked it every time we went into the room.”
Brackel said they would pay bills and “spoil ourselves a little.”
“He wants a fishing boat, and I want my kitchen done. We started remodeling the kitchen, and we had to stop because we ran out of money. We’ve been living without a kitchen for a couple of months,” she explained. “We had 68 cents in our bank account, so this is god-sent.”
Brackel said the win gave her a new appreciation for the Lottery.
“I was not a believer - trust me - and I am now!” she declared. “Believe, because it can happen. It does happen to people like us.”
