MIDLOTHIAN TEACHER RECEIVES SUPER TEACHER AWARD
May 22, 2012
There are teachers, and then there are “Super Teachers.” Kimberly Bliley, special education teacher at Midlothian Middle School, has been selected as one of eight educators statewide to receive the 2012 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award.
Kimberly Bliley was awarded today in a surprise presentation at the school in front of students, faculty and special guests. The award, sponsored by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies, consists of a cash prize of $2,000 and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies. In addition to the wonderful classroom supplies and cash prizes, this year, all eight winning Super Teacher schools will receive a dynamic Science Museum of Virginia educational experience to be fulfilled during the 2012-2013 school year!
The Lottery received nearly 1,200 Super Teacher nominations statewide and more than 160 in this area of the state. Kimberly Bliley is the 6th of eight public school teachers to receive the Super Teacher Award for 2012. Two more surprise presentations will occur this spring, and each winner represents one of eight geographic regions of the state.
Stephanie K. Gerber, parent of student, nominated Bliley because she “supports and encourages students and never rests until they experience the pleasures and joys of success through academic and personal growth.” In her nomination essay, Gerber also praises her creativity and innovation. She wrote, “Passionate about what her students’ find exciting, she lifts them up and leads them on adventures where weak hearts or deformities cannot prevent them from going.”
The 2012 Virginia Lottery Super Teachers were selected by a panel of distinguished educators and community leaders, including:
* Dr. Jo Lynne DeMary, Director, Center for School Improvement, VCU School of Education, former State Superintendent for Public Instruction * Dr. Martha Ross, JMU, Department Head, Early, Elementary and Reading Education * Hon. Jim Dyke, Partner, McGuire Woods, former Secretary of Education for Virginia * Anne Carson, President of the Virginia PTA * Roderick Zano, 2011 Super Teacher Award Recipient, Princess Anne High School, Virginia Beach
The judges selected the eight winners based on the strength of the nominations and educators’ qualities as exemplified by the nominator. Each nomination included a short essay addressing the teacher’s passion for and commitment to the profession, innovation and creativity in the classroom, and parental involvement.
“We are delighted to recognize Kimberly Bliley for her dedication and unique approach to teaching,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. “The Virginia Lottery is committed to helping Virginia’s public schools, and that includes recognizing outstanding Super Teachers like Ms. Bliley who make a difference everyday in the lives of Virginia’s youth.”
