HAMPTON TEACHER RECEIVES SUPER TEACHER AWARD
May 24, 2012
There are teachers, and then there are “Super Teachers.” Jeffrey Weigel, 8th grade chemistry, physics and engineering teacher at Eaton Middle School has been selected as one of eight educators statewide to receive the 2012 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award.
Jeffrey Weigel was awarded today in a surprise presentation at the school in front of students, faculty and special guests. The award, sponsored by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies, consists of a cash prize of $2,000 and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies. In addition to the wonderful classroom supplies and cash prizes, this year, all eight winning Super Teacher schools will receive a dynamic Science Museum of Virginia educational experience to be fulfilled during the 2012-2013 school year!
The Lottery received nearly 1,200 Super Teacher nominations statewide and more than 190 in the Lottery’s Norfolk sales area. Jeffrey Weigel is the seventh of eight public school teachers to receive the Super Teacher Award for 2012. One more surprise presentation will occur this spring, and each winner represents one of eight geographic regions of the state.
Lora Howerton, another teacher at Eaton, nominated Jeffrey Weigel because he “wants to impart his passion of Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering onto the next generation of scientists in our school.” In her nomination essay, Howerton also praises his innovation and creativity. She wrote, “He continually works closely with the Virginia Air and Space Center bringing interactive physical science demonstrations to his lessons. Also, Mr. Weigel has worked with NASA to produce and implement satellite data lesson plans where his students analyze actual NASA data.”
The 2012 Virginia Lottery Super Teachers were selected by a panel of distinguished educators and community leaders, including:
* Dr. Jo Lynne DeMary, Director, Center for School Improvement, VCU School of Education, former State Superintendent for Public Instruction * Dr. Martha Ross, JMU, Department Head, Early, Elementary and Reading Education * Hon. Jim Dyke, Partner, McGuire Woods, former Secretary of Education for Virginia * Anne Carson, President of the Virginia PTA * Roderick Zano, 2011 Super Teacher Award Recipient, Princess Anne High School, Virginia Beach
The judges selected the eight winners based on the strength of the nominations and educators’ qualities as exemplified by the nominator. Each nomination included a short essay addressing the teacher’s passion for and commitment to the profession, innovation and creativity in the classroom, and parental involvement.
“We are delighted to recognize Jeffrey Weigel for his dedication and unique approach to teaching,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. “The Virginia Lottery is committed to helping Virginia’s public schools, and that includes recognizing outstanding Super Teachers like Mr. Weigel who make a difference everyday in the lives of Virginia’s youth.”
