DIVINE REASON ORANGE COUNTY LOTTERY WINNER WAITED TO CLAIM PRIZE
June 7, 2012
Stop and think for a moment. How long would you wait to turn in your ticket if you had won a big Lottery prize? Glenn Ayers waited 10 weeks before he claimed his MEGA Millions ticket worth $308,573. Why? According to Ayers, he was following someone else’s lead. “Praise the Lord. He was guiding our steps,” Ayers said.
It’s not that he didn’t want the money. Ayers and his wife Lisa said they wanted to make sure they did it right. “I was trying to control my excitement. We didn’t want to get it and spend it. We were trying to figure out the smart thing to do,” Lisa explained.
Glenn, who is 53, says from the beginning the win has been a bit of a ride because he originally misread the numbers and thought he might have hit the jackpot. The March 27th draw was a huge one -- $363 million - part of the run up to the record-breaking $656 million draw three days later. It didn’t help that he didn’t have his glasses on, plus his granddaughter was blocking the screen as he tried to verify his ticket online.
Once he figured it out, Glenn said he forgot all about what could have been and focused on the amount he had actually won. “We feel so blessed,” said Glenn.
The two have been together 20 years and are excited about what lies ahead, which includes a nice vacation since their options have gotten a lot better. In the meantime, Glenn plans to keep playing the Lottery, believing it’s a little bit good for the soul. “Win or lose, you can go on a little mental vacation for one dollar.”
Ayers purchased his lucky ticket at Stopper Liquor, which is located at 1170 Yorba Linda Boulevard in Placentia (Orange County).
A total of nine tickets matched five out of six numbers that night. They hit 19, 44, 34, 9 and 51, missing only the Mega number of 24. As of today, two of those tickets remain unclaimed. One was sold at the 7-Eleven located at 7014 Archibald Avenue in Corona (Riverside County). The other was sold at the Arco ampm located at 3890 North University Parkway in San Bernardino (San Bernardino County).
