DINWIDDIE COUNTY WOMAN WINS $1 MILLION ON FRIDAY THE 13TH
July 17, 2012
Who says Friday the 13th is an unlucky day? Not Sylvia Rolfe. The Dinwiddie County woman won the top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Million Dollar Cash Bonanza game on that supposedly unlucky day.
“I’ve never won anything, so I may as well play on Friday the 13th,” she recalled thinking.
She bought the winning ticket at Nelson’s Feed, 10019 Cox Road in Ford, Virginia. When she scratched the ticket and realized it was a $1 million winner, she didn’t make a fuss.
“I showed it to the clerk. He was more happy than I was,” she told Lottery officials. “Then I went about my business.”
She had a choice of taking the full $1 million over 25 years or a one-time cash option of $653,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option. In addition, the store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
