Coffee was the reason that Donald Cambensy of Taylorsville stopped at Thorntons on Poplar Level Road in Louisville. Yesterday morning Donald got more than a caffeine rush by the time he left the store after deciding to buy a $20 $175,000 Stacks of Cash scratch off ticket.
Donald and his wife Ginny had just moved into a new home the day before and he’d been pretty tight with his money lately. “I stood there for a few minutes thinking I shouldn’t buy one. When next, Donald told the clerk, ‘Oh, just give me one of those tickets,’” pointing to the $175,000 Stacks of Cash ticket.
He took the ticket out to van to scratch it off when he noticed he’d scratched off a spot with a 10X and $500 as the prize amount. Continuing to scratch, he saw more of the same.
“At this point I knew I’d won $40,000,” Donald told lottery officials.
Before scratching off the rest of the ticket he called his wife. “I’ve just won a lot of money on a scratch-off,” he said. Ginny replied, “You’re giving me a heart attack.” Donald then proceeded to tell her he was kidding and drove home to show her the ticket. He scratched off the remainder of the ticket and realized he’d won the game’s top prize of $175,000.
This isn’t the first time the 55-year-old has been lucky playing the lottery. Four years ago while living in Florida he won $250,000.
Donald says winning this money isn’t going to change him and that he and his wife plan to put the money in savings.
After taxes, Donald received a check for $120,750.
