BROWNSTOWNS $1 MILLION POWERBALL WINNER TO RETIRE
August 23, 2012
One of two million-dollar winners from the Aug. 15 Powerball drawing has come forward to claim his prize.   For the last week, Brownstown has been abuzz with rumors and chatter about the identity of the unknown individual who purchased a $1 million Powerball ticket at Circle K at 107 W. Commerce Drive.  The mystery has been solved.  Steve Edwards of Brownstown is the holder of the lucky ticket.  He claimed his prize at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters in Indianapolis today.

“I spent the whole day yesterday with financial advisors. I’m going to retire,” said Edwards. “I am going to be able to do it now.  I gave my two weeks notice last night.”

Edwards works for Versatech in Crothersville.  His wife, Joan, is retired from Cummins in Columbus. Edwards said he was on his break at work when he discovered his win on the night of Aug. 15.  He had a hard time keeping his great news to himself while he finished his shift. He was hesitant to believe it himself at first.

He checked his numbers, as he always does, listening to the radio in his car.  He was shocked to see the first five numbers, but not the Powerball number, on his ticket match up to the winning numbers.

“I thought I won but I wasn’t sure so I called my wife and asked her if she was sitting down,” said Edwards.  “She said, ‘What’s wrong?’  I said, ‘I think I just won a million dollars.’  She said, ‘No really, what’s wrong?’”

In shock, Edwards tucked his ticket away, put on his poker face and went back into work to finish his shift - with a huge secret.

“Powerball was up there and everybody was checking their numbers and talking about the jackpot,” said Edwards. “People even asked me if I won. I didn’t tell ‘em.”

Edwards said he figures his good fortune is going to be good for a laugh at work during his final two weeks.  Other than sorting out the details of his much-anticipated retirement, he says he doesn’t have much planned.

“We’re not the type of people to do extravagant stuff. We don’t need a lot and don’t want to do a whole lot,” said Edwards. “I just want to take it easy.”

The winning Aug. 15 Powerball numbers were: 6-27-46-51-56 PB: 21. One ticket, purchased in Michigan, matched all six numbers in the drawing and won a jackpot of $337 million.

A second Powerball ticket purchased in Indiana is worth $1 million in that drawing.  That ticket was purchased at Hardee’s of Howe South at 7065 N. 475 E. in Howe and has not yet been claimed.
