H.J. WILLIAMS OF GROTON WINS $10,000 PLAYING CT LOTTERY “LUCKY-4-LIFE” GAME
October 6, 2009
Heyward “H.J.” Williams was full of good humor when he came to lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill to claim a $10,000 Lucky-4-Life prize for matching 4 of the Lucky-4-Life numbers drawn on September 24, 2009: 06-14-25-31. He did not match the Lucky Ball, which was 2, but Williams spent no time complaining, “Hey, this is $10,000 more than I had before I got here,” said Williams with a grin.

While traveling out of town for his employer, Electric Boat, he often visits the CT Lottery’s web site (ctlottery.org) to locate the winning numbers. When he compared his Lucky-4-Life “Quick Pick” ticket with the winning numbers drawn for September 24, he quickly realized that the 4-number match landed him a 10,000 second prize ($6,870 after taxes).

“This prize money comes at a good time,” Williams remarked to lottery officials, then pausing in thought. “Then again, any time is a good time to win $10,000,” he finished with a laugh.

Williams, who is 26 years retired from the United States Navy, purchased his winning Lucky-4-Life ticket for the September 24, 2009 drawing at Shell Food Mart, located at 820 Poquonnock Road in Groton.

Meanwhile, the Lucky-4-Life top prize drawn August 20 was won, but the prize remains UNCLAIMED as of this time. The single top prize ticket worth $2,000 a week, every week for the rest of its owner’s life was sold in New Haven County, and it must be redeemed within 180 days from the August 20 drawing date (February 16, 2010) in order for prize payments to begin.

To play Lucky-4-Life, players pick four unique numbers ranging from 1 to 39. Next, a LUCKY BALL number from 1 to 39 is chosen. Top prize winners must match all five numbers to claim the Top Prize - up to $2,000 a week for life, depending on the number of winning tickets sold for that level. The minimum top prize payment period is 20 years. The top prize is governed by “split-prize” liability, which means the top prize is divided equally among all top prize tickets. There are eight prize levels in all, with the minimum prize being $4 - twice the purchase price.

Overall odds are 1 in 14.4. Odds of winning the “for life” top prize are approximately 1 in 3.2 million. Top prize values are subject to split-prize liability and may be less than advertised.
