HOQUIAM MARATHONERS WIN $170,000
September 11, 2009
Hoquiam – Bob Martin and his wife Marci from Hoquiam run somewhere between a 5k and a marathon every week. This Saturday they’ll run a half marathon and then follow it up with a full marathon on Sunday. Hopefully they’ll be able to stay focused over the nearly 40 miles since they just won $170,000 playing Hit 5, a draw game from Washington’s Lottery.
Last Friday, Bob and Marci were on their way out of town for the weekend when they stopped in an Aberdeen Safeway for a few things. On the way out, Bob picked up a Hit 5 ticket; he says he buys two every week. At the end of their weekend getaway, the couple stopped in at another Safeway store where Bob scanned his tickets. One of the tickets prompted him to contact the Lottery. “We bought a paper and went to the car. We saw there was only one winner,” Bob recalled. “Marci read the numbers to me out loud. We shed a few tears, said some happy things and now we’re here.”
The Martin’s are looking at their Lottery win as a golden opportunity to become debt free. “We’ve had a ‘struggle year’ this year,” Bob said. “Bills have added up. This is a big relief; a ‘way out.’” Bob works in construction and Marci is a teacher in Hoquiam and the couple have three children. “They’re all pretty excited,” Bob said. When asked how he and Marci might celebrate their good fortune this week, Bob said, “We’re pretty low key,” and mentioned the marathon-and-a-half they’d be running – low key, indeed.
Bob and Marci Martin bought their $170,000 winning Hit 5 ticket at the Safeway on 221 West Heron in Aberdeen. Another Aberdeen store, Young’s Quick Stop #2 sold a $100,000 Scratch ticket to Martin Crabtree last November.
