MANHATTAN MAN PURCHASES OZ-SOME TICKET!

TOPEKA, KAN. – Terry Mathis says if a game is “being good” to him, he likes to stick with it. So, when he won $40 on the first $2 Wizard of Oz instant ticket he scratched, he followed the yellow brick road back to his favorite lottery retailer and got another one.
“I was sitting in my truck before work scratching it, and one of my symbols was an oil can. I scratched off an oil can in the winning symbols and couldn’t’ believe it when I saw the prize was $10,000!” said the 31-year-old Manhattan winner.
Mathis said he bought the Wizard of Oz ticket initially because he noticed it was new. The Kansas Lottery launched the game earlier this month to celebrate this year’s 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz movie.
“I really enjoy playing scratch tickets,” Mathis explained. “I used to have a job at a gas station and saw people win on the lottery all the time. I remember one woman who won $20,000 and it changed her life.”
For the past two years, Mathis has been employed by Asplundh, a company specializing in tree cutting for electrical line clearance.
“After I scratched the ticket, I had to work four hours this morning before I could come to Topeka to claim my ticket,” smiled Mathis. “They were the longest four hours of my life.”
Mathis’ favorite lottery retailer, and the place where he purchased the $10,000 winning ticket, is Dara’s Fast Lane 7, located at 1709 Ft. Riley Boulevard in Manhattan. The winner plans to pay bills with his prize money and perhaps take a trip to Las Vegas.
