URBANDALE TRUCK DRIVER DISCOVERS $30,000 LOTTERY PRIZE ON THE ROAD

DES MOINES, Iowa – An Urbandale man had to pull over to check his ticket a second time when he realized he may have won a very big prize.
Robert Bembinster Jr. said he initially thought he had won $300 playing the lottery's "Crossword" instant-scratch game, but then realized he had forgotten to scratch the "Bonus" section of the ticket.
"I then looked at the ticket and then I pulled over again because I didn't scratch the bonus, and that's when I saw I had all 10 words," Bembinster said.
He was shocked when he saw all 10 words on the ticket.
"I was like, 'I can't believe it. No way. No way!'" Bembinster said.
Bembinster, 38, is an independent contractor for a delivery service. His girlfriend owns Horizon Express, LLC in Urbandale, and he runs the business.
Bembinster stopped a little further down the road to have his ticket validated. He said the cashier recognized him from his frequent truck-driving stops. She said she wished she had been the one that had sold him the ticket!
Bembinster's girlfriend was the first to hear of the news. He said she didn't believe him at first, but was very excited after she saw the ticket.
"She said, 'Well let's spend it wisely and not foolishly because of the hard times,'" he said.
Bembinster said he plans to get six months ahead in all his bills and make his life a little easier throughout 2009.
Bembinster claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He bought his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 5970 Morning Star Court in Pleasant Hill.
"I'm just glad that I won and I really appreciate the lottery being around," Bembinster said.
Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning in the game are about 1 in 4.
