PRIZE CHECK IN AISLE 3
July 29, 2009
DES MOINES, Iowa – Standing in the middle of a store full of people, an Ames man discovered he had won a $50,000 lottery prize.
Dane Hannusch, 33, and his wife were standing in Kum & Go, 1950 Princeton St. in Grimes, when he decided to buy and scratch a few "Double Payday" instant-scratch tickets.
He was more than a little surprised when the second card he scratched revealed a $50,000 prize.
"I kind of kept it a little low-key, but I told my wife who was standing next to me that I had won $50,000 and she was in complete denial," Hannusch said. "The guy next to me was a paramedic and he's like, 'Did you win?' and I was like, 'Yeah I just won $50,000,' and he said, 'Congratulations!'"
Hannusch said he told the cashier he knew the ticket couldn't be cashed there, but asked him to run it through anyway. Hannusch and his wife then had to make the 45 minute trip home, thinking about the ticket the entire time.
"At first I was just in denial. It took quite some time for it to sink in, but I had a 45 minute drive home after that, and I think I was smiling the whole 45 minutes," he said.
Hannusch said he plans to pay off existing debt and make some improvements to his home with his winnings.
"I'd love to go on a shopping spree, but I think I'd rather pay off my debt," he said.
Hannusch, who is the fishing department manager at Scheels in Ames, claimed his ticket Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
"I just want to say thanks to the Iowa Lottery for allowing us to play these games," Hannusch said.
Double Payday consists of an instant-scratch ticket on the front and a pull-tab game on the back. The ticket has three play areas on the front of the ticket and four tabs that can be pulled open on the back. Overall odds of winning are about 1 in 3.85.
Six prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Double Payday as well as 60 prizes of $1,000, more than 170 prizes of $250 as well as more than 580 prizes of $100.
