MOBERLY ENGINEER CLAIMS $335,385 SHOW ME CASH JACKPOT

A trip to five different convenience stores ended with one big payout for a Moberly man. Vernon Southards, 58, saw the Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash jackpot from the June 15 drawing was getting high, so he hatched a plan to purchase several tickets from various stores to increase his chances of winning the big prize. Southards, a Norfolk Southern engineer and farmer, discovered one of his tickets was the jackpot winner after his wife "checked the stack" at their home only hours after the purchases were made.
"I was playing on the computer, and she was checking the numbers sitting on the couch," he began. "She said, ’I think I’m having a heart attack.’ It scared me to death, because I thought she was having a heart attack. I jumped up, and she said we got all of the numbers!"
After recovering from the shock of realizing they were $335,385 richer, the Southards made a few telephone calls.
"I called my daughter and my son, and he thought we were pulling a trick on him," he said.
According to Southards, his son is "always pulling pranks on all of us," and he thought his dad might be trying to get him back.
When asked about plans for the windfall, Southards said they will "put it in the bank and share it with the family."
Southards purchased the winning ticket from Casey’s General Store, 326 S. Morley St. in Moberly. The first-time Lottery winner used Quick Pick to select the winning numbers, which were: 5, 6, 17, 19 and 35.
Show Me Cash offers a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000, which increases by at least $5,000 at each drawing. Southards was the 40th Show Me Cash jackpot winner since the game began on Sept. 8, 2008. To date, more than $5 million has been awarded in the game.
