NEODESHA COUPLE START HOLIDAY WEEKEND WITH $20,000 WIN
June 2, 2009
TOPEKA, KAN. – Randy Schafer and his wife Karen of Neodesha had a great start to their Memorial Day weekend. Not only did Randy take an extra day off work to enjoy the holiday, they revealed all 10 words on a $2 Bonus Crossword instant scratch ticket, winning a $20,000 top prize!
“Since I was off work the Friday before Memorial Day, I went down to a local convenience store to get my wife some donuts,” said Schafer. “I buy scratch tickets weekly and my wife always tells me to buy the same tickets for her, so I bought two Crosswords.”
After he arrived home, they each scratched a ticket.
“Karen’s ticket was the first ticket off a brand new pack,” explained Schafer. “It was ticket number 000. We realized her ticket had a lot of words. When we first counted, we noticed nine words. After looking again, we saw that 10 words were visible.”
When Randy realized they may have won a $20,000 top prize, he signed the back of the ticket, folded it, put it in his wallet and immediately called his brother Richard.
“I drove to my brother’s house where we decided we’d better have the ticket checked,” said Schafer. “We both went back to the store and after they checked the ticket, they said I had to contact Lottery headquarters. I called my boss and told him I couldn’t have picked a better day to take off work because I’d just won $20,000!”
Randy and Karen, who have been married 30 years, have four children and nine grandchildren. Randy is employed at Cobalt Boats of Neodesha and Karen is a housewife. They plan to pay bills with their prize money.
The winning ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store 1396, located at 125 Main St. in Neodesha.
