KANSAS COUPLE WINS $10,000 AFTER STOPPING FOR DIRECTIONS
June 2, 2009
TOPEKA, KAN. – When Daniel and Claire Smith got lost yesterday driving to their new insurance office in Paola, it turned into a classic gender disagreement. Daniel wanted to keep on looking until they found the office by themselves. Claire insisted they stop and ask directions. Claire won. And, boy, what a win it was!
“Dan finally pulled over at a Casey’s, but he refused to go in and ask for directions, so I went in,” said Claire. “And while I was there I bought us some lottery tickets.”
Daniel, still annoyed that Claire had stopped to ask for directions, didn’t want to scratch the $2 Betty Boop ticket she had bought him, but Claire insisted.
“I finally scratched it, rather grudgingly,” Daniel joked with lottery officials. “And we were astonished to see it was a $10,000 winner. It hasn’t been out of our sight since!”
The Smiths, who were just married last November, plan to use their prize money to pay medical bills and cover some of the expenses they have with their new house. They consider themselves very lucky, and not just because of their winning lottery ticket.
“We’re lucky in love, because we found each other,” said the happy couple.
They plan to stay happy, too. Daniel said he learned something yesterday when they won $10,000 after Claire insisted they stop and ask for directions.
“I have to pay more attention to what she tells me,” laughed Daniel. “Ninety-nine times out of 100 she’s right anyway.”
The Smiths live in Linn Valley, Kan., 17 miles south of Louisburg. Daniel is employed as a station captain at the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District. Claire works at Cosco in Overland Park.
Their lucky Betty Boop ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store 1237, located at 119 North Hospital Drive in Paola.
