“RICH FOR LIFE!”
May 19, 2009
FERNDALE – Mark Tapley of Ferndale enjoys stopping by the Ferndale Mini Market a couple times a week to pick up a few items, including Lottery Scratch tickets. Tapley’s wife is the manager at the market, and last week, Mark made his usual stop at the store before heading out of town. This, however, would not be like his usual visits.
Before leaving the parking lot, Mark scratched the Lottery ticket he just bought and couldn’t believe what he saw. He had to flip the ticket over several times to make sure that he believed what he was seeing, that he had just won “Rich for Life.” Mark thought to himself, “Am I reading this right?” The “Rich for Life” carries a top prize of $2,000 a week for life!
Mark said on his way out of town he stopped at every rest stop just to make the Scratch ticket was still there. “I was so confused. You play Scratch but I kept thinking it can’t be this simple,” said Mark. During his drive out of town, Mark said he kept passing by things like RV lots and visualizing what he could now buy with the winnings. Until Mark was able to come into the Lottery office he made sure to keep the ticket locked safely in his car.
He plans on paying off his mortgage with the winnings and making sure his twin 13 year old daughters will be able to go to college without the stress of having jobs. “To tell them they already have a guarantee to get an education …wow!” exclaimed Mark. He might also be taking his family on a vacation to Hawaii.
Mark chose to collect his winnings as a lump sum of $1.4 million. He bought the winning ticket at Ferndale Mini Market which has been named Washington’s Lottery Retailer of the Year and has sold another $1 million Lottery Scratch ticket in the past. Ferndale Mini Market owner Bob Bell took his entire crew to Hawaii with the retail selling bonus on a previous ticket.
