$30,000 WIN MAY HELP BUY NEW HOME FOR BATAVIA MAN

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Batavia man won the top prize of $30,000 playing the "Crossword" (orange newsprint) scratch game.
Shafer Harris said he doesn't normally buy lottery tickets. He just decided to pick one up on a whim.
"I decided to buy one. I didn't scratch it off until in the morning," explained Harris to lottery staff Tuesday. "My mom was on the way to work so I told her to go take it in."
Harris' mother, Brenda Parcell, had his ticket validated and then waited until she met with her son to share the news.
"She waited until she got to my house. I couldn't believe it," said Harris, who works at Performance Pipe in Fairfield. "She took the rest of the day off to come up here with me."
He immediately called to share the news with his wife.
Harris, 23, said, "She didn't know what to think."
He already has one idea on how to use his winnings.
"Maybe a down payment on a house," he said.
Harris claimed his prize at the Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. He bought his winning ticket at Casey's, 1901 W. Burlington in Fairfield.
Crossword (orange newsprint) is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning in the game are about 1 in 4.
Fifty-six prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (orange newsprint) as well as 76 prizes of $3,000, more than 1,100 prizes of $300 as well as more than 5,400 prizes of $100.
