BIRTHDAY WISH MADE TRUE WITH NO CANDLES NEEDED
April 20, 2009
Moncton, (NB) – It was a birthday filled with gifts of Scratch’N Win tickets that lead to the ultimate birthday present for Goose Bay, Labrador resident Max Matthews: the knowledge that he and wife Lillian can give their kids the kind of life that every parent wants for their children. It was, after all, one of their sons who purchased the winning Scratch’N Win Monopoly ticket that revealed a $1 million prize, so Max and Lillian are more than happy to cover the costs of school for their boys.
This isn’t the first time the Matthews’ have had a winning moment though. Just last year they were the proud winners of a new car. Lillian recalls that moment, saying, “At the time I remember saying to Max, wow, this is our lifetime win.” Little did they know that a mere one year later they’d really have the win of their lifetime.
$1 million can realize a lot of dreams in Atlantic Canada, and the Matthews have already started dreaming. They’ve started browsing house plans for their new dream home which, as Max was quick to mention, “Will definitely have a basement. That will be ‘Dad’s place’ with an exercise room and a sauna.” The family currently lives in a mobile home and looks forward to the added space that will come with their new house.
One would think that receiving the $1 million cheque would be the highlight of the family’s voyage to Moncton; the first trip that Max, Lillian and their sons Pat and Max have ever taken together: not so. Max will not only pick up their winning prize, he’ll get the opportunity to reconnect with his eldest son, who resides in New Brunswick, at the cheque presentation. “That for me is worth more than a million dollars,” says Max.
It’s clear that for some people, a big win like this one won’t change the things they find most important. Max and Lillian both plan to keep working and gush about how much they love their jobs. And one thing is for certain; don’t look for a drastic change in address for the Matthews: their future will always include life in Goose Bay. That’s home and that’s where they’ll stay.
Bennett’s Ultramar in Goose Bay, Labrador will receive a 1% seller’s prize for selling Max’s son the winning ticket.
