WICHITA RESIDENT TRIES POWERBALL – WINS $10,000

TOPEKA, KAN. – With economic times the way they are, Belen Puga thought he’d give Powerball a try. The Wichita resident purchased a $5 Quick Pick Powerball ticket for Wednesday night’s drawing, winning a $10,000 cash prize.
“I’ve only played a couple of times,” said Puga. “With the way the economy is, I thought why not give it a shot and see what happens.”
Thursday morning, Puga checked his winning ticket on the Kansas Lottery’s website and was shocked when he realized he’d won a $10,000 prize.
“Later in the morning after checking my ticket online, I left work and went to a convenience store and asked them to check my ticket,” said Puga. “I went back to work and told my boss I had to leave, so I could run an errand. I headed to Topeka to claim my prize.”
According to Puga, he sent his wife Debbie a text message explaining he’d won $10,000 and he was on his way to Topeka.
“I couldn’t call my wife because she’s a school teacher, so I sent her a text message,” said Puga. “Her response was, ‘Wahoo!’”
Luck must run in the family. Earlier this month, Puga’s son-in-law claimed a $10,000 top prize playing a $1 instant scratch ticket.
“Now I’m a believer that people really do win,” smiled Puga.
Puga and his wife, who have been married two years, have six children between them and six grandchildren. He plans to pay bills with his prize money.
The winning ticket was purchased at Valero 17058, 1826 W. 13th St. N. in Wichita.
