LOTTERY WINNER JUST WANTS TO HELP A FRIEND
March 9, 2009
KENNEWICK – A pipe fitter named John Tatum of Kennewick has won $250,000 and his first thoughts are to help a friend. John won the cash playing "Big Payout!" a Scratch game from Washington's Lottery. He doesn't have plans to buy a flashy new car or put a down payment on a house, "I'm just not a big money spender, I'm pretty boring," he said. He does have plans for the money though, because when he bought the ticket he was hoping to win in order to help a friend who has fallen on tough times. "My friend was in some trouble financially, and I had to help him," said John. "I bought the ticket thinking 'I really need some money to help out my friend.'"
John says that despite the big win, he won't let his life change much. Even when he discovered that he'd won he stayed level headed, "I just went out the door to work, like any other day."
A few things in John's life will change though. He plans to pay off some student loans and settle some of his own debts. He says he'll eventually buy a house and maybe even take a vacation, but not now, "I don't really do vacations. There are other personal things I need to finish. Then…maybe." The nature of John's job requires him to constantly travel and look for new contracts to stay busy. Hopefully an extra $250,000 will relieve some of the stress that type of work can bring.
John bought his "Big Payout!" Scratch ticket from Albertsons at 2504 W. Clearwater in Kennewick.
