WICHITA RESIDENT DOUBLES PRIZE – WINS $10,000

TOPEKA, KAN. – Joseph Whalen of Wichita has his own system when playing scratch tickets. He always plays a variety of games, scratches them at home and if he has any winners, he sets them aside until he has quite a few to cash in. Last Sunday afternoon, he had accumulated $30 worth of winners and decided it was time to cash them in. One of the tickets he purchased was a $1 Double Doubler instant ticket. He was very surprised when he revealed a $10,000 top prize playing the game!
“When he realized he’d won, he started screaming,” said Whalen’s wife Lisa. “The kids and I couldn’t quit laughing. We’ve never seen him act that way. He was ecstatic.”
“The most I’ve won before now was $40 or $50,” said Whalen. “I was excited.”
According to Whalen, his wife Lisa has always given him a hard time about playing lottery games.
“She thought I was wasting money,” said Whalen. “Now she’s buying tickets.”
Whalen and Lisa, who have four children, plan to pay a few bills and save the rest of their prize money.
The winning ticket was purchased at Phillips 66, located at 802 N. West St. in Wichita.
