$30,000 LOTTERY PRIZE MEANS MOVE BACK HOME FOR ILLINOIS WOMAN

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Round Lake Beach, Ill. woman won $30,000 playing the "Crossword" (orange newsprint) scratch game while visiting family in Iowa.
Marcela Medellin bought the Crossword scratch ticket on a whim because her brother suggested it.
"He's always winning $10, $30," explained Medellin to Lottery staff on Tuesday. "And he was like, 'Let’s just play.'"
Medellin claimed her prize at the Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. She purchased her winning ticket at Kum & Go, 106 W. Second St. in Brooklyn.
Medellin, 27, said she waited a couple of days before she actually scratched her Crossword ticket.
"We actually waited until Sunday after breakfast, after church," said Medellin. "We were just kind of kidding around because we want to travel to Mexico in a couple of weeks. And just kidding around, if we win it we were going to go right away. And yeah, it came up."
Medellin shared her good news with her relatives in Iowa, but she planned to surprise her family in Mexico. She said her mother knew "we were going, she just didn’t know when."
Medellin had additional plans besides just the trip to Mexico to use her winnings on.
"We're thinking actually a down payment on a house," Medellin explained. "We're thinking actually in Perry."
The move would bring Medellin closer to her brother in Iowa.
"We just thank God we got blessed because it is a blessing," Medellin said to Lottery staff as she collected her winnings and headed off to make her plans reality.
Crossword (orange newsprint) is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning in the game are about 1 in 4.
Seventy-one prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (orange newsprint) as well as 107 prizes of $3,000, more than 1,545 prizes of $300 and more than 7,445 prizes of $100.
