POSITIVE THINKING PROVES LUCKY FOR MONCTON LOTTO 6/49 WINNER
February 25, 2009
Moncton, (NB) - “I think I can, I think I can.” Monctonian Edward Lirette is an example of the power of positive thinking. Not only did he tell a friend that Saturday was going to be his lucky night for the lottery, he did so before he even had the ticket in his hand. And he was right – on Saturday, February 21 Edward won a LOTTO 6/49 second prize of $224,863.

For Edward, Saturday was just like any other day. It was in church that afternoon with his wife Doriella where a friend reminded him of the night’s big draw. With $48 million up for grabs, the friend said she had bought her ticket – and it was a winner. “That can’t be,” joked Edward, “Yours can’t be the winning ticket because I’ve got tonight’s winning ticket.”

That conversation prompted Edward to make a pit stop on the way home to actually pick up the ticket that ended up matching five of six winning numbers, and the bonus number for that night’s draw.

It wasn’t until Sunday afternoon, after hearing that Moncton had a winner, that the Lirettes’ daughter-in-law checked ALC’s website for the winning numbers. As she read the numbers aloud, Edward checked the numbers against his ticket and couldn’t believe his eyes; in fact, he passed the ticket to family members to double, triple and quadruple check.

The Lirettes say they don’t have any big plans for their winnings. “We’re really happy,” Edward said. “We’re just going to keep living one day at a time.” He did mention that he’ll continue to play the lottery though, and was quick to note that he has his MILLIONAIRE Life ticket for this Saturday’s draw. His family chimed in to say that things tend to come in threes, so who knows, maybe this Saturday will prove just as sweet for the Lirettes.

Edward wasn’t the only Moncton-area resident doing a happy dance this past weekend. Joseph Hicks of Lakeville took home an Atlantic 49 prize of $64,900.

The Needs on Mountain Road in Moncton will receive a seller’s prize representing one per cent of the total winnings for selling Edward his ticket, while Lakeside Convenience in Lakeville will receive a one per cent seller’s prize for selling the winning ticket to Joseph.
