"I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE"
February 23, 2009
OLYMPIA – Bill Murphy and his wife Connie have been married for 44 years. Connie says Bill, who is a public employee, has been playing the lottery as long as she can remember. She also admits that she has always given him a hard time about it…until now. Bill just won $1.8 million playing Lotto.
Bill bought his ticket at Safeway on Martin Avenue in Olympia on Wednesday, February 11th. He says that after purchasing the five dollar ticket he threw it in his lunch box and went to work. That's where the ticket stayed until Bill got a little reminder. On Friday the 13th of all days, he was getting ready for work and paging through The Olympian when he saw a story titled; "Who's the winner of $1.8 million?" He joined in the paper's search and checked the winning numbers against his own ticket, realizing it was him. That night he put on a shirt and tie, went to his wife and said, "I need to tell you something that will change your life." He wasn't kidding, Bill and Connie both plan to retire this year. Bill called the timing of the win "providential." It certainly was.
Bill's brother and son along with their wives joined Bill and Connie while they claimed their prize Friday morning at the Olympia Lottery office. Andre, their son, was very happy for his parents, "I'm overjoyed, they (Bill and Connie) have spent their entire adult lives serving others," he said. "I couldn't be happier, they deserve it." On top of their full time jobs, Bill and Connie are also educational missionaries and spent several years working in Brazil.
It's been a week since Bill discovered he was the Lotto winner. He says he has been keeping his ticket in his underwear drawer for the last seven days. When Bill's brother heard that today, he couldn't help but joke that "he was bound to check that sometime."
