DES MOINES, Iowa – An Eau Claire, Wis woman purchased a $30,000 winning "Crossword" (orange newsprint) scratch ticket at a Des Moines store.
Tina Doan, 49, a truck driver for Buckboard, grabbed a couple of Crossword scratch tickets in Des Moines on her regular route from St. Paul, Minn. to Des Moines.
She bought her winning ticket at Quik Trip, 4801 N.E. 14th St. in Des Moines.
"I like to play the Crosswords," said Doan. "It kind of takes away from the time I'm sitting there. I just bought two today and one of them I had to count it like three or four times just to make sure it was right."
Doan immediately went back into the Quik Trip to have the clerk validate the ticket. She got a little more than she expected after the clerk confirmed her winning ticket.
"He goes, 'You just won $30,000!'" said Doan as she claimed her prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. "Everybody was like, 'Aw, congratulations.'"
One customer even proposed to Doan. "I don't know who he was," laughed Doan.
Doan planned to tell her family about her good luck over the weekend. "We have a family reunion this weekend. I'll probably break it to them. Just whip out the check and hang it on the wall," Doan laughed.
Crossword (orange newsprint) is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning in the game are about 1 in 4.
Doan said her winnings will go for a really good use.
"I have my daughter and grandson living with me," explained Doan. "And my sister was laid off, so she's living with me. And I have a house so it'll help out a lot with the bills."
Doan felt very fortunate to have won the $30,000. "It's a blessing. It's really a blessing," expressed Doan.
Eighty-three prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (orange newsprint) as well as 125 prizes of $3,000, more than 1,830 prizes of $300 and more than 8,740 prizes of $100.
