THE DRY SPELL IS OVER
January 27, 2009
DES MOINES, Iowa – If the name Keith Selix doesn't sound familiar to you, it should. Think back to June of 2005. Selix, a Waterloo native, claimed the top prize of $30,000 on "Wild Crossword" (lizard). Not long after that in September the same year Selix made another visit to the Iowa Lottery to claim a $21,000 top prize on "Double Blackjack" (green). Not a bad year for Selix. But his luck didn't stop there. In April of 2006 Selix was back again this time claiming yet another top prize of $30,000 on the "Wild Crossword" (confetti) scratch game.

"That was prior to this. That was about two months after my wife had deceased," said Selix as he claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. "And I've had pretty good luck since then. But I'd give it all back and more so, but the Lord doesn't operate that way."

So what do you do after you've already won big three times in less than a year? That's simple. In Selix’s case, he just kept on playing his favorite Crossword scratch games. And don't you know, you guessed it, he won again! This time Selix, now 83, retired, claimed the top prize of $30,000 on Crossword (orange newsprint) scratch game!

"I kind of had a hunch Saturday night," explained Selix. "And I got $30,000 and $17."

By now Selix is pretty used to the feeling of winning. "It's kind of nice!" laughed Selix. "I wished I could keep it up. It's helping at this time of year."

Selix bought his winning ticket at A & S Petroleum, 127 Jefferson St. in Waterloo.

Crossword (orange newsprint) is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning in the game are about 1 in 4.

Selix said he intends to put his winnings to good use.

"I appreciate and thank the Iowa Lottery," said Selix as he expressed his gratitude.

Eighty-two prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (orange newsprint) as well as 124 prizes of $3,000, more than 1,820 prizes of $300 and more than 8,700 prizes of $100.
