COLORADO LOTTERY PLAYERS WIN BIG IN WEDNESDAY’S DRAWING
December 18, 2008
DENVER – Wednesday proved to be a very lucky day for two Colorado Lottery players. One ticket purchased in Boulder matched all six numbers in last night’s Lotto drawing, netting the $5.3 million jackpot prize. Another player in Lakewood scored $800,000 in Powerball after matching five numbers in Wednesday’s drawing and choosing the Power Play option. Since the Power Play number was 4, the usual $200,000 prize for matching five numbers quadrupled to $800,000.

While the $800,000 Powerball winner claimed his prize Thursday morning, the Lotto jackpot winner has yet to come forward. The person has 180 days from Wednesday’s drawing to claim the prize. The Lotto jackpot hasn’t been hit since Oct. 8, 2008, when one lucky winner earned an $11 million prize.

“We are thrilled to see two of our players hit such large prizes,” said Colorado Lottery Director Jack Boehm. “And once again, our Powerball winner proves that choosing Power Play for an extra $1 really pays off.”

The $800,000 Powerball prize is one of the largest non-jackpot prizes awarded in Colorado this year. The Powerball winner (who wishes to remain anonymous) received his prize in a lump sum. The Lotto winner may choose to receive the $5.3 million jackpot in cash (approximately a $2.6 million sum) or through an annuity, paid out in 25 installments. The first payment would be 2.5 percent of the jackpot share, and then increase by 3.7 percent each year after that. In these uncertain economic times, it may be nice to know the Colorado Lottery guarantees annuity payments, regardless of what happens to the institution that owns the annuity. Both prizes would be subject to 25 percent Federal tax and 4 percent State tax.

The winning Lotto numbers were 5, 9, 22, 23, 27 and 32. The winning ticket was sold at King Soopers, 1650 30th St., Boulder. The store will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning Lotto ticket. The $800,000 Powerball ticket was sold at the K & G Conoco at 1110 S. Pierce in Lakewood. That store will receive $3,000 for selling a ticket that matched five of six numbers plus Power Play.

“While we’re glad to be spreading good cheer with these large prizes, we’d also like to remind our customers to play responsibly during the holiday season,” added Boehm. “We’re also eager for our players to watch for the all new Powerball drawing on Jan. 7, live from Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.”
