HOLIDAY GROCERY SHOPPING LIST INCLUDES TURKEY, STUFFING AND $1,000,000 IN GRAVY
December 15, 2008
Schenectady, NY – Kathleen Dobson of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, stopped into her local Hannaford supermarket on State Highway 30 in Amsterdam to pick up everything she needed for a true Thanksgiving feast and left with more than she bargained for. Along with her turkey, stuffing, and all the ingredients she needed to make her famous deviled eggs, the 55-year-old help desk cashier at the City’s Lowe’s store brought home a $1,000,000 scratch-off prize on a New York Poker instant game from the New York Lottery.
“What a feeling,” said the mother of four who is eagerly awaiting the birth of her 10th grandchild in May. “It’s just nice to know we’ve got that money in the bank. We can relax a little.”
Dobson and her husband Jeff, 47, a truck driver for the Iowa-based Ruan Transportation Management Systems, Inc., said they both planned to keep working…for the time being.
“A never-ending Florida vacation sounds great to me,” she said. “But that’s a few years down the road.”
As for any immediate plans for the money, Dobson said she planned to pay off her car and some other bills and “give something back to the community that has been so good to us over the years.”
Dobson said she is now planning her menu for a “bigger than ever” Christmas celebration for the whole family and “Yes,” she said she will be doing her shopping at her “lucky Hannaford” store.
Dobson purchased her winning New York Poker instant ticket on November 20, 2008 at Hannaford’s State Highway 30 store in Amsterdam and claimed it the same day at the Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Schenectady. The $1,000,000 top prize on the New York Poker instant game is paid as $50,000 a year for 20 years, less required tax withholdings. Dobson’s annual net check will total $34,075.
