BEACON LOTTERY WINNER WAITS SIX MONTHS BEFORE CLAIMING DEAL OR NO DEAL INSTANT TICKET
December 3, 2008
Schenectady, NY – Richard “Porky” Antalek bought one of his favorite New York Lottery instant scratch off tickets back in May, 2008 for the chance to make all of his dreams come true. The semi-retired bartender from Beacon, Dutchess County, who describes himself as a “very patient sort” held onto the ticket for six months before bringing it to Lottery officials for payment.
“I’ve been waiting too long to rush into anything,” said the 62-year old Antalek who recently cut back his hours after 35 years of tending bar full-time at different businesses around Beacon. “I really didn’t have a plan for the money so I just kept the ticket until I did. Now, with the holidays here, it seemed like the right time to cash in.”
Richard’s windfall came from the popular Deal or no Deal instant scratch off ticket. He scratched the million dollar top prize in May and kept it in his bedroom while he considered all of his options.
“It’s not that I wasn’t excited about the money,” said Antalek who still tends bar a couple of nights a week. “I thought of a lot of things I could do with it, but working is the thing I like most and I’m still doing that!”
When asked about his plans for the money, Antalek said he had a few ideas and one definite plan.
“A new set of (golf) clubs, a new (bowling) ball – maybe. A trip to Vegas – definitely.”
Antalek purchased his $1,000,000 winning ticket in May of this year at Main Beacon Enterprise on Main Street in Beacon. He claimed his prize on November, 3 2008 at the Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Fishkill. The Deal or no Deal top prize is paid in 20 annual increments of $50,000 each, less required tax withholdings. Antelek’s annual net check will total $34,075.
Antalek’s win marks the fourth time this year a Dutchess County resident has claimed a New York Lottery prize of $1,000,000 or more. In January, LaGrangeville residents Anna Marie and Steve Cuomo claimed their $1,000,000 prize on the Liberty Millions instant ticket. Steven Rugar, from Pleasant Valley, claimed his million dollar top prize from the No Limit Poker ticket in February. The most recent million dollar winner was William Anthony Rao from Hopewell Junction. He won his jackpot prize on the $500,000,000 Extravaganza instant ticket in May.
