MULVANE RESIDENT WINS $5,000 WHILE HELPING VETERANS
September 25, 2008
TOPEKA, KAN. – According to Kathy Rogers, when she and her husband buy lottery tickets, they almost always purchase tickets that provide direct benefit to Kansas military veterans. The Kansas Lottery calls these “Veterans Benefit” games, and in the past five years they have generated nearly $4 million for Kansas veterans programs.
Veterans Benefit tickets have also generated $5,000 for Kathy Rogers! Yesterday the 55-year-old Mulvane woman and her husband Randall were taking turns scratching off the play areas of the six $1 Veterans Cash tickets they had purchased. The object was to get three like prize amounts. On one ticket, they had scratched off two $5,000s. It was Kathy’s turn to scratch the last number. When she revealed another $5,000, she couldn’t believe it.
“I said, ‘No way! There’s no way!’ because I don’t ever win big money. We usually break even, but I don’t ever win like this!”
Kathy purchased her lucky ticket at Phillips 66 6368, located on the Kansas Turnpike at the Cassoday Exit. Before coming to Topeka to claim their big prize, Randall got out the camera and took a picture of the ticket so they could show their friends. Then Kathy signed the back of the ticket and put it her billfold to keep it safe.
The Randalls, who had two grown children and two grandchildren, plan to purchase a laptop computer with part of the prize money. They also plan to buy more Veterans Benefit tickets in the future.
“Because the proceeds benefit our veterans,” said Rogers.
The Kansas Lottery’s Veterans Benefit games provide direct funding for Kansas Veterans’ programs, Kansas National Guard scholarships, and the Museum of the Kansas National Guard.
Veterans Benefit tickets currently being sold by Lottery retailers throughout the state of Kansas are a $2 scratch ticket called Veterans Celebration and two $1 scratch tickets, Veterans Bucks and Veterans Cash. Players can win top cash prizes of $10,000 on the $2 ticket, or up to $5,000 on each of the $1 tickets.
The Lottery will launch additional Veterans Benefit games later this year, including a Betty Boop ticket, showing the iconic cartoon character in military garb, and a ticket featuring military mascots.
