BRIDGEPORT GREAT-GRANDMOTHER WINS $1 MILLION CT LOTTERY POWERBALL PRIZE
September 22, 2008
Waiting in line at the Shaw’s Grocery customer service desk, Rose Marks almost decided to step away before buying a Powerball Quick Pick ticket for the Saturday, September 20 drawing. But, “my feet didn’t move,” Rose told Lottery officials earlier today.

Instead, she waited for the one ticket she planned to buy, a $2 Powerball with PowerPlay ticket.

Rose’s patience was paid off with a $1,000,000 prize for matching 5 of the 6 numbers drawn that night. Although more than 36,000 winning tickets were sold in Connecticut for Saturday’s Powerball drawing, Rose’s was the only ticket sold in Connecticut that matched the 5 white-ball numbers. Normally a $200,000 prize level, Rose’s prize automatically increased to $1,000,000 because she activated the PowerPlay option, and the multiplier drawn that night was a 5.

Accompanied by a family member, Rose arrived at CT Lottery offices on Monday to claim her prize. She hadn’t yet realized the value of the PowerPlay feature added to her ticket, and was “overwhelmed” when CT Lottery officials gave her the good news that her windfall made her “Connecticut’s Newest Millionaire.” Rose shared her plans for the prize money – to spread it among her children and her many grand and great-grandchildren. Her advice to others, “take a chance.”

The numbers drawn Saturday evening were 6, 28, 30, 40, 47, and the Powerball was 24. The PowerPlay multiplier was 5.

This prize is a clear illustration of the fact that even when no one hits the grand prize, there is still a great deal of money that can be won. After each drawing, there are always thousands of winners at other prize levels. Because of these other prizes, it is important that players check their tickets after every drawing. A total of 865,771 tickets across the nation won more than $9.5 million in prizes for the September 20 drawing, meanwhile the jackpot will continue to grow.

The jackpot for the Wednesday, September 24 drawing will be $176 million with the cash option at $89 million. The jackpot is currently the world’s largest lottery prize. The Lottery reminds players to please play responsibly.

Rose's winning Powerball ticket was purchased at Shaw's on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield.
