STILLWATER LOTTERY WINNER COLLECTS $1,000,000 PRIZE CHECK ON HIS 53RD BIRTHDAY
September 16, 2008
Schenectady, NY – Donald Birch of Stillwater, NY received a very special birthday present today, a $1,000,000 prize he won playing a $500,000,000 Extravaganza instant game ticket from the New York Lottery.
The New York Lottery’s Yolanda Vega, who was joined by new drawing personality Jina Matthews, presented Birch his prize check today at the Stewart’s Shop where he purchased his winning ticket at 4 Vosburgh Road in Mechanicville.
“I’m speechless,” said Birch. “They shouldn’t have.”
It could be something in the water, or maybe the ice cream! Birch is the fourth resident of the small Saratoga County town, named after the placid water of the river, to claim a $1,000,000 prize since October of last year. And he’s the second Lottery player to buy a winning ticket at a Stewart’s Shop in 26 days.
Birch joins three other recent Stillwater Lottery Millionaires including Win for Life winner Debra Zuzick who claimed her prize in October 2007, Marvin & Joyce Mondoux who claimed their $1,000,000 prize on the Merry Money instant scratch of ticket in January and Theresa Dibble who won $1,000,000 on the Cashtastic instant scratch off ticket in July.
Birch purchased his winning $500,000,000 Extravaganza instant ticket at the Mechanicville Stewart’s Shop on Saturday, August 16, 2008 on his way home from work. Theresa Dibble purchased her winning ticket 26 days earlier at the Stewarts located on Hudson River Road in Waterford.
“I got home and scratched the ticket and didn’t really know I was a winner,” said Birch. “I had my sister take a look at it and she knew immediately. She screamed so loud, I think the neighbors heard her.”
To celebrate the occasion, Stewarts renamed their popular ice cream flavor “Cookies ‘N Cream” to “Cookies ‘N DREAMS” and offered free samples of the rich blend of light vanilla ice cream and chocolate cookies to scores of lucky customers throughout the morning.
Birch claimed his winning ticket on Monday, August 18, 2008 at the Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Schenectady. He will receive his $1,000,000 prize as $50,000 a year for the next 20 years less required tax withholdings. His annual net check will total $34,075.
