A late night run for a cappuccino and a Krispy Kreme doughnut led a Springfield woman to a winning Powerball ticket. When Melva Dechert, 52, stopped at Snak Atak, 310 S. Scenic Avenue in Springfield, she decided to add a Powerball ticket for the Sept. 3 drawing to her purchase. She learned the Quick Pick ticket was worth $200,000 when she returned to the store for another cappuccino three days later.

"Friday was my girlfriend’s birthday, and I took her up to Lamplighter Inn for a late dinner," recalled Dechert. "We left from there and went back to Snak Atak. I bought another Powerball ticket and handed her the winning ticket and asked her to check it."

According to Dechert, her friend Vickie then told her some news that started them both dancing.

"She kept screaming at me, ’Melva, Melva, Melva!’" said Dechert.

Dechert said she would use the windfall to pay off the mortgage on her home. She and her husband, Brian, are also planning to take a cruise to the Bahamas. Dechert explained that she had won trips before, but she could never afford to take the vacation.

"The trip has already been bought," said Dechert. "We’ll have the money to be able to take it now. This is really wonderful."

Dechert matched five white-ball numbers to win the second-level Powerball prize of $200,000. The winning numbers were 38, 40, 46, 49 and 50.
