POWERPLAY WINS IN WV
September 8, 2008
The past two Powerball drawings have resulted in West Virginia PowerPlay prizes totaling $81,786, according to Lottery Director John Musgrave. One of those tickets won $40,000, while another won $20,000. Both prizes were claimed today.
Brenda Lambert, 52, of Bluefield, claimed her $40,000 PowerPlay prize from the Powerball drawing held Sept. 6. One of six Easy Pick tickets she bought at S&S Express in Bluefield, the ticket won $10,000; since the PowerPlay multiplier drawn was four, Lambert was awarded $40,000. She missed the $91.5 million jackpot by one number.
Claiming a $20,000 prize from the drawing held Sept. 3, Clyde Simons, 73, of Tunnelton, said he always pays a dollar extra to buy the PowerPlay multiplier option when he buys a Powerball ticket. “I normally buy one, maybe two, but it’s usually my own numbers. This time I forgot them at home, so I got the computer to pick them for me; they missed $81 million by just one number.”
Simons won $10,000 by matching four numbers plus the Powerball. Because the PowerPlay number drawn was the multiplier two, the prize was $20,000. His ticket was purchased from Go Mart #37 in Grafton.
A retired foreman on disability from a tree cutting business, Simons said he would have no problem in spending his prize. “Oh, don’t worry. I have plenty of bills. It’ll probably be spent by the time I get home.”
The highest PowerPlay prize awarded by the West Virginia Lottery was a $600,000 award shared by two retired friends from Grant County last January. The multiplier option was introduced in 2001.
