$100,000 PRIZE FOR 100 MILLIONTH FAN IN ORIOLE’S FRANCHISE HISTORY
August 25, 2008

(Baltimore) – Cameras began flashing, people swarmed, even the Orioles’ Bird swooped in as Velma Greene entered the turnstile at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Saturday evening. Certain that she was the object of a “candid camera” show, Velma kept repeating, “This has got to be a joke.”

Her initial skepticism soon turned to elation when she learned that she was the 100 millionth fan to attend a Baltimore Orioles game in the history of the franchise. In a promotion sponsored by The Maryland Lottery and the Orioles, Velma received $100,000, season tickets to the Orioles for five years, a team-signed ball, customized jersey and more.

Maryland Lottery Director Buddy Roogow presented the stunned 48-year-old middle-school- math teacher with a ceremonial check and balloons. “I am so excited about this promotion,” said Roogow. This is a major milestone in Oriole’s history. That we could play a part in it is tremendously gratifying.”

Velma and her husband, Dexter “Rocky” Greene are both big fans of the Lottery. Marylanders for many years, they now reside in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. The couple was attending their first game of the season with a large group of friends, one of whom had won a skybox for the game. That win paled in comparison when Velma was crowned the 100 millionth fan.

Velma credited her husband with the well-timed arrival, saying that he had gotten them to the game late. Upon being told she was $100,000 richer, Velma screamed with delight. “I’m truly grateful,” she said breathlessly.

Velma intends to use some of the money to celebrate Rocky’s 50th Birthday and possibly take a cruise. “It still hasn’t sunken in yet,” she said, shaking in her head.
