SHAWNEE RESIDENT WINS $10,000 PLAYING POWERBALL

TOPEKA, KAN. – According to Richard Hughes, he plays $5 each of Powerball, Hot Lotto and Super Kansas Cash every Wednesday and Saturday. His persistence has finally paid off. The Shawnee resident matched four numbers plus the Powerball, winning a $10,000 cash prize in the August 27 drawing.
“I stopped at the grocery store yesterday, so I could check my tickets,” explained Hughes. “When I checked my Powerball ticket, the Check-A-Ticket machine read, ‘Sign back of ticket. See store clerk.’ I’ve never seen that before, so I asked the gal behind the counter to check my ticket.”
When the store clerk realized Hughes won $10,000, she couldn’t believe it.
“When she scanned my ticket, she said, ‘Oh, my goodness! You won $10,000! I’ve never seen anything like this.’” said Hughes. “She was as happy as I was.”
A year ago, Hughes never thought he’d be so lucky.
“A year ago, I was literally on my death bed,” said Hughes. “I received a kidney transplant and I’m doing much better. This money came at a perfect time. I’m making a trip to Florida in September. I’d like to find a retirement community to move to.”
The winning ticket was purchased at QuikTrip 243, located at 9200 Santa Fe Dr. in Overland Park.
