WAKEFIELD RESIDENT WINS $5,000 TOP PRIZE

TOPEKA, KAN. – “Turning of the tides,” is the way Shelley Brown described her $5,000 win. The Wakefield resident came to Lottery headquarters today to claim a $5,000 top prize she won playing a $1 Mixed Greens instant scratch ticket.
“I can’t even tell you what this means to me,” said a teary-eyed Brown. “I recently lost my job and didn’t know how I was going to pay for medication I have to take on a daily basis.”
Eight years ago, the 35-year-old suffered permanent injuries when a jet ski ran over her while she was swimming.
“This is truly a blessing,” said Brown. “I was so shocked when I won.”
According to Brown, she stopped at a local convenience store to cash in $20 worth of winning instant scratch tickets she had accumulated.
“I wasn’t even going to buy the Mixed Green game, because there were only two tickets left on the roll,” said Brown. “The store clerk talked me into buying them. I’m glad I listened!”
Brown, who has three children, is confident she’ll make a trip back to Lottery headquarters to claim a Powerball jackpot.
“I’m going to win the big one someday,” smiled Brown.
The winning ticket was purchased at Short Stop 3, located at 701 Elm St. in Wakefield.
