PRESCOTT RESIDENT CLAIMS $200,000 POWERBALL PRIZE
August 22, 2008
TOPEKA, KAN. – Jerry Cannady received the surprise of a lifetime yesterday when checking his Powerball ticket. The Prescott resident matched the first five numbers, winning a $200,000 prize in the August 20 drawing!
“I play Powerball and Super Kansas Cash every week,” explained Cannady. “I usually wait a week before I check my tickets, but yesterday after lunch, I decided to stop and check them.”
Cannady first checked his tickets on the store’s Check-A-Ticket machine. When the Check-A-Ticket screen read, “See store clerk,” he couldn’t figure out what was going on, so he asked a store clerk to run his ticket through their lottery terminal.
“When she scanned my ticket, she asked me if I knew what I had won,” said Cannady. “I told her no, I didn’t have a clue. She said, ‘You just won $200,000!’ I thought she was pulling my leg. I’m tickled to death. The man up above has been good to me. I live comfortably.”
Todd Gillis, who has been a great friend and neighbor, accompanied Cannady to Lottery headquarters today to claim his prize.
“Jerry came over last night to show me his winning ticket,” said Gillis. “I thought he was going to tell me he was getting married. Boy, was I way off. He was so funny. He thought he’d lost the ticket twice. He laid his ticket on the table and the ceiling fan blew it off, twice.”
Cannady, who is retired, plans to invest his winnings.
The winning ticket was purchased at PDQ, located at 21356 Kansas Hwy 239, in Prescott.
